Georgia O’Keefe, 1937

“In 1935 O’Keefe began to experiment with compositions that combined bones and landscapes, without regard to relative size, scale, or perspective. Despite her realistic painting technique, there is no verisimilitude to this scene. The poetic title – conveying longing and loneliness – suggests that the odd juxtaposition of words and images depicts an emotional state of mind as well as a physical location.”
