The Beheading of Saint John the BaptistĀ – Caravaggio – 1608
*
Massive painting, 12ft x 17ft, commisioned by the Knights of Malta as an altar piece. It still hangs in St. John’s Co-Cathedral in Malta. Widely considered a masterpiece, it is the only painting the Caravaggio signed his own name on, and it appears written in St. John’s blood, at the bottom center of the painting.
